Teens and Seniors Share The Ultimate Gift
By Lori Masur, KEYS Navigator

KEYS (Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services), the youth philanthropy program at the Community Foundation, initiated a new project in February. Each KEYS student was paired with a senior citizen to read and then discuss the book, The Ultimate Gift, by Jim Stovall.

This new project came about for several reasons. Part of the KEYS Mission is to impact education in our community. The KEYS students had never funded any educational project for senior citizens in their 11-year history; and KEYS had received funding from the Dekko Foundation that could be used for an innovative project involving students. Thus the idea of connecting with area senior citizens in a reading project was organized. The Ultimate Gift was selected because of its chapter themes of life lessons. KEYS kids hoped that the seniors would share their life wisdom with them.

Eighth grade KEYS student, Kayley Herbruck, and Mildred Frantz are partnered together to discuss life lessons as they read
The Ultimate Gift.

On Thursday, February 15th, 20 KEYS students traveled to Grace Village to meet their partnered 20 senior citizens. To become acquainted with each other, they all played bingo, created by the KEYS students using theme words from the book. Prizes, brought by the KEYS students, were awarded.

Conversations were lively between the students and seniors and the time passed quickly. When their time together concluded, everyone left with their copy of the book, The Ultimate Gift, and a bookmark made by a KEYS student. The students and seniors will come together again in May to discuss the book and to share lunch. More conversations will take place, for sure, and the project will be educational for all!
