Building A Future With Habitat

Annual Report Stories

When the world feels like it’s shifting under your feet, home should be the one place that offers steady ground. For Brianna and her two young sons, even the walls of their current home couldn’t block out the uncertainty she feels.

“I’m not exactly comfortable with our living situation, but I make it work because it’s a roof over our heads,” Brianna shared. Her words carry the weight of a mother’s determination. The family lives in a trailer that is far from what any of them would call stable. Surging rent costs, constant maintenance problems, and the fear of letting her children play outside have left Brianna feeling what she describes in one word: stuck.

“We’re limited by the house and the neighborhood,” she explained. “My kids can’t be themselves here.” She dreamt of a place where her boys could play, where her business could flourish, and where she could breathe a little easier knowing they wouldn’t be forced to leave.

That dream began to take shape after a conversation in the most unexpected of places—her beauty chair. As a self-employed stylist, it was with one of her clients, when she was nudged to apply for Habitat’s Homeownership Program.

That spark of encouragement turned into action. Brianna pulled together her application, went through a home visit, and waited. Then came the call. “I was with my entire family when I found out. At first, I was just excited, and then suddenly, I started crying,” Brianna said. “I was just so thankful. I actually made it!”

For Brianna and her boys, the word home is beginning to take on a new meaning and one filled with possibility. “I look forward to the stability,” she said. “A place my kids won’t have to leave. A place I can pass down to them. I know we won’t be kicked out. I’ll finally have some control again.”

With her sights set on the future, Brianna is already planning a garden in the yard, a laundry room that isn’t part of the hallway, and a backyard big enough for her boys to run freely. She dreams of family dinners, laughter echoing through her home, and evenings spent working on her business without the looming fear of displacement. Above all, she sees happiness. “This home will be our ticket to grow together.”

Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County was a recipient of a GIFT VII grant from the Community Foundation that allowed dreams like Brianna’s to come true. Together, we are helping build not just walls and windows, but a future full of stability, joy, and light for people right here in Kosciusko County.
